how long will my EV take to charge?

it depends on the battery size of your vehicle and the power of your charge point, it can be as little as 30 minutes or more than 12 hours. typically plug-in hybrids (e.g. bmw x5, kia xceed, toyota rav4) charge at a rate of 3.7kw, fully charging within 3 hours.

Fully electric cars (e.g. tesla, The bmw I Range vehicles, vw id3) can charge at 7.4kw on a single phase supply but have a much bigger battery, a 75kwh tesla model s would take 10 hours to fully charge. as an example, the latest bmw ix with a 77kw battery will take 11hrs to charge on a 7.4kw but would only take 7hrs on an 11kw charger.

how much will it cost to charge?

a kwh – or kilowatt-hour – is what’s used to measure energy usage, the cost of a kwh varies considerably depending on your supplier and the region you live in. currently, average prices in the uk range from 26.1p/kw to 28.2p/kw.

example based on two full chargers per week for a 77kw battery, across one month paying 28pence per kw this would cost £172.48, this would give you an estimated mile range of 1,680 miles.

what charger do i need?

chargers are split into different categories. ac chargers are a much better option for most ev households as they are often installed in homes, offices, and other commercial settings. these electric car chargers have power outputs of 3.7kw or 7.4kw, they will charge most electric vehicles from empty to full range in around 8-11 hours.

commercial setup with a 3-phase power supply as well as the above size chargers they can also install 22kW electric car chargers with even quicker charge times, in addition to this they can install dc chargers and offer up to 300kw charging stations as long as there is sufficient amps available on their power supply.
